Darren Mattocks has been in contact with Phoenix Rising over a potential move, sources have told From the Ashes.
The Jamaican international, most recently with Sudan Premier League side Al-Merrikh, could be lined up to fill the spot left by Rufat Dadashov’s transfer to Schalke II.
Sources suggested that playing time had been a hard line in the sides’ negotiations, but it is unclear if this has since been resolved.
Earlier on Tuesday, Rising coach Rick Schantz told reporters that he was in the process of signing a new forward, but would not identify the player.
“I know that we’re just waiting on some paperwork to be finalized, but I’m excited about the player that we’ve added,” Schantz said. “It’s going to be great for the team, and great for the locker room because some of the guys know him.”
Mattocks previously played with Aodhan Quinn at Akron University, and for the Jamaican national team with Kevon Lambert. He was also part of the 2019 FC Cincinnati squad with Ben Lundt, although the current Rising goalkeeper was sent out on loan that season.
The pacy striker – who has scored 18 goals in 50 caps for the Reggae Boyz – possesses a green card, meaning that he would not count as an international player under USL rules.
