OPPONENT WATCH: Portland Timbers 2

  • Timbers 2 (16 wins, 4 draws, 13 losses) are in 6th position on 52 points, 4 places and 11 points behind Rising in 2nd.
  • They are guaranteed a 6th, 7th or 8th playoff position on games won, irrespective of tonight’s result.
  • The two teams last met on August 4th, when Rising earned an impressive 4-1 win on the road with a Cortez brace, plus goals from Fernandez and Asante.
  • Since that game, T2 have won 6, drawn 2, and lost 2 games.  However, they visit the Valley tonight on the back of a 3-game winless streak.  Their last victory was a 2-1 win at LV Lights on September 16.
  • T2 are a formidable opponent on the road, with 7 wins, 4 draws, and 5 defeats.

POR stats

  • However, they have failed to find the net in 259 minutes of football (home and away).  Their last two goals were 8th and 11th minute penalties scored by Barmby and Loria in a 2-2 draw away to Fresno on September 22.
  • The 5 goals conceded by T2 in their last 3 games includes an embarrassing 36th minute left-footed shot by Reno’s Duke Lacroix from the byline on the left, through the keeper’s legs.

POR goals

  • Foster Langsdorf has contributed 14 of T2’s 57 goals this season.  A product of the Portland Timbers Academy, he is currently on loan from the parent MLS club and has made 28 appearances for T2 in 2018.  Only 1 of his goals has been scored from outside the penalty area.  Langsdorf is due a goal.  He last scored over 7 weeks ago in a 2-2 home draw with Orange County.
  • T2’s other main goal threat is Victor Arboleda.  The Colombian forward has contributed 7 goals in 15 games for T2 this season, last scoring in the win away to LV Lights.  Currently in his third season at Providence Park, Arboleda is also on loan from the parent club.
  • T2 are least likely to score in the first 30 minutes of USL games.

Timbers TS2

  • Goalkeeping duties this season have been primarily shared by Alex Mangels and Kendall McIntosh.  Both keepers have recorded 5 clean sheets in 2018, but McIntosh has played 3 games more.  McIntosh has a marginally better save success rate than Mangels (68.1% compared to 64.7%), but he has conceded 11 more goals, including the 4 scored by Rising at Providence Park.
  • Do not leave the game before the final whistle tonight.  T2 have conceded 25 of the 49 goals in the last 30 minutes of games this season.

Timbers TC2

  • T2’s roster includes 3 players who appeared for FC Tucson in 2014 – keeper Kendall McIntosh and defenders Max Ornstil and Josh Phillips.
  • Veteran defender Roy Miller is one of several players on loan from the first team.  The 33-year-old has made over 150 MLS appearances, and earned 59 full international caps for Costa Rica.
  • Center back/defensive midfielder Bill Tuiloma is another notable player.  The 23-year-old previously played for Marseilles (France) and represented New Zealand at the 2017 Confederations Cup.
  • Renzo Zambrano and Andre Lewis have made the most appearances for T2 in 2018 (30 out of 33 games).
  • Venezuelan midfielder Zambrano joined T2 in 2017 from Real Valladolid (Spain) and earned 2 full international caps in 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Bolivia and Ecuador in November 2016.  He has contributed 3 goals and 4 assists this season, including the winner at LV Lights on September 16.
  • Jamaican midfielder Andre Lewis has recorded 3 assists but no goals this season. The 24-year-old is a former Whitecaps 2 and Charleston Battery (loan) player who moved to T2 in 2016, but missed a large part of the 2017 season through a knee injury.  Lewis made his international debut with the Jamaican National Team in February against Honduras, playing 14 minutes as a second half substitute.
  • T2 has collected 53 yellow and 2 red cards this season.  Both red cards have been for second bookable offenses.  Defender Lamar Batista picked up a second yellow in a 3-2 home win over RGV on April 18; and Nathan Smith collected 2 yellows in 16 second half minutes in a 1-0 loss away to Sacramento on September 29.  Defender Smith made 12 appearances, including 9 starts, for LA Galaxy in the MLS in 2017.
  • Expect T2 to line-up in a 4-2-3-1 position tonight.  It’s been their formation of choice in 26 of 33 USL games this season, including their last 11 games.
