Rising midfielder Kevon Lambert has backed his native country of Jamaica to make a run at the CONCACAF Gold Cup title this summer.
“I believe in them,” Lambert said. “I think they’re going to bring it home.”
The 24-year-old has made six Gold Cup appearances for the Reggae Boyz, but has had to adjust to a new way of experiencing the tournament after being left off of Theodore Whitmore’s 23-man squad for 2021.
“I’m just chilling at home on my couch, rooting for the boys,” Lambert said. “Hopefully they get the three points. I know they can’t hear me through the screen but I’m there supporting.”
Jamaica has already qualified for the quarter final with a game to spare, but will set its course to the final in one final clash against Costa Rica. When asked to give a score prediction for that match, Lambert said it would finish 1-0 to the Reggae Boyz, with Shamar Nicholson bagging the goal.
“I’m just hoping that the guys go out there and give their all for the country, you know?” he added. “We all want to be there. It’s a really good opportunity for the guys to put on a show and make the country proud.”
One moment of pride: seeing his former teammate and close friend Junior Flemmings score a late winner in Jamaica’s last clash against Guadeloupe.
“That’s my brother right there,” Lambert said. “It was really great to see him score. I was on my couch watching that game. I was screaming in my apartment. Just to see him come on and score that goal, it was a winning goal, the most important goal. It was really, really great to see him score that goal for sure.”
Jamaica rounds out its group stage with a Group C clash against Los Ticos at 4 p.m. Arizona time. The Reggae Boyz will clinch top spot with a win, or finish second with any other result.
