Jamaican center-forward Darren Mattocks has signed for Phoenix Rising, the club announced on Wednesday.
Mattocks, 30, most recently played for Sudan Premier League club Al-Merrikh, after stints with several MLS clubs.
From the Ashes first reported discussions between the club and Mattocks on Tuesday, following Rising coach Rick Schantz’s remarks that he was “waiting on some paperwork to be finalized” before announcing his new striker.
“I’m very excited to add a player of Darren’s ability,” Schantz said in a press release. “His experience and understanding of the game will help us in our push for trophies. Darren gives us another very dynamic player who can create his own opportunities. He also has the speed to be very dangerous in transition. My hope is he finds great success with us and can earn his way back into the Jamaican national team picture.”
Mattocks previously played with Aodhan Quinn at Akron University, and for the Jamaican national team with Kevon Lambert. He was also part of the 2019 FC Cincinnati squad with Ben Lundt, although the current Rising goalkeeper was sent out on loan that season.
“I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity to join Phoenix Rising,” Mattocks said in the club’s announcement. “I look forward to getting to work right away and helping the team achieve its goal of winning a championship this season.”
The pacy striker – who has scored 18 goals in 50 caps for the Reggae Boyz, including one in the 2015 Gold Cup final – possesses a green card, meaning that he would not count as an international player under USL rules.
