With T2’s squad profiled a mere 6 days ago, this playoff Opponent Watch focuses instead on comparisons.
There was nothing particularly unique about T2’s performance in the Valley last Saturday compared to the way they have played throughout the season.
T2’s possession was marginally up; but their duel and aerial duel success rates, their total number of shots, shots on target, and fouls conceded were all approximately on par with the rest of the season. They even lined up 4-2-3-1 – their formation of choice in 27 USL games.
Rising were less successful for duels in general, but in most other respects they actually performed above their season average last Saturday with one critical exception. They couldn’t find the back of the net. This suggests that a little more composure in front of goal tonight could go a long way.
A comparison of the two regular season games between both clubs is also interesting.
T2 missed two penalties in the first game, and had 18 shots to Rising’s 8, which suggests the scoreline flattered the visitors at Providence Park. Half of Rising’s shots in Oregon were also converted into goals.
T2 certainly increased their ability to clear the ball last week (26 occasions compared to 6 in the first encounter).
Perhaps the biggest difference, though, was Rising’s tactics. Last Saturday Rising matched T2’s 4-2-3-1 formation. However, setting up 4-3-3 in Oregon, Lambert, Vega and Fernandez controlled the midfield, allowing Asante and Riggi to attack with pace in support of Cortez.
If the coaching team adopt a similar formation tonight, who will stand in for the much-missed Riggi? Johnson is the obvious option, but he has still to hit his pre-injury form. Brewer or Forbes are Schantz’s other choices. The stats clearly show JJ has had the better season. Forbes has the higher crossing accuracy rate, but he is also most likely to stray offside. Brewer has enjoyed less game time, and therefore could prove more of a surprise to T2.
The tension in the stands could be unbearable if the game has to be decided by penalties. The choice of goal end will come down to a coin toss. Last season Lambert and Mala failed to keep their nerve from 12 yards out in Swope. Dia and Awako converted.
For the first time in USL, each team can make a fourth substitution if the game goes to extra time. With penalties a distinct possibility, could Rising use Drogba off the bench to greater effect?
Rubiel Vazquez will officiate tonight. Promoted to the MLS last season, he has also taken charge of one Concacaf League match (Arabe Unido v Arnett Gardens in August).
